  1. as a general rule hens are fairly quiet, though sometimes they will squawk when they have laid an egg or if they see danger…but they won’t be as noisy as the roosters. There are many towns and cities around north america that are starting to legalize owning/raising 4-6 hen flocks in the backyard. The important thing is to make your chicken house/pens predator proof, dogs will take a chicken quite quickly 🙁 as will raccoons and other animals. Good luck, hope you can raise a few birds!

  2. Would you think they are to loud to raise in a suburban area? Would they disturb the neighbors? Lol. Sorry, I am new.

  6. hi, most of my chickens live 4-6 years but I just lost an 11 year old Plymouth Barred Rock Hen! wow, I raised her from an egg! (and I miss her!). The red hens usually live about 5 years though, good luck!

  7. Nice flock looks like you love your birds a lot. Chickens are very underrated as pets. Thanks for posting this.

  8. My love of the chicken species is two-fold…: one as an excellent source of edible protein, and one for a pet.

  9. I have friends that raise chickens in pens, not free-range like mine, and they do well! They have only the ground, no grass but they don’t seam to mind it. I’m sure your chickens would be fine! Shavings will get moldy if they become wet though, I wouldn’t put that on the ground outside, the plain ground should be fine! Good luck, you’ll have a blast. Thank you on your compliments, I love all chickens!
