Sempervivum calcareum is a hardy French species with crisp reddish-purple tips and a blue-green center. One of the easier to care for hens and chicks, this sempervivum succulent can handle more water than most. Hens & Chicks do need plenty of outdoor sunlight to show their best colors and maintain their tight rosette form. They thrive in well-draining soils and pots with drainage holes. They will produce several chicks which you can leave on the plant to cluster or remove and start a new plant. As with most succulent plants, water only when the soil is dry and give your plant plenty of light. A bright window will work if outdoors in not an option. These little buggers are frost hardy and can survive outdoors in the coldest of winters.
