Chicken Coop Nesting Boxes – DYI

Article by Chicken Coops

Raising chickens is easy and can be a lot of fun for the whole family. Your kids will enjoy feeding the chickens. You might not enjoy the cleaning too much, but the benefits the droppings will provide for your garden will make it all worthwhile. Chickens will lay their eggs just about anywhere they feel safe and warm, but it is still a good idea to provide them with nice clean nesting boxes. Chicken coop nesting boxes will make it easier for you to find the eggs as well. Hopefully, your hens will use the boxes.

A nesting box can be made out of just about anything. They can be cardboard, plastic, wood or metal. If you use cardboard, replacing the whole box will be easier than trying to clean it. The bottom should be lined with non-toxic, clean materials, such as wood shavings, straw or paper. The box should be cleaned at least once a week. A clean environment will keep your chickens healthy and happy. And healthy happy chickens lay more eggs.

Buying nesting boxes is another option, although most people prefer to build their own. There are two main considerations: the size of the box and the material. Wooden boxes look nice and fit right in with the rest of the coop. Cardboard boxes don’t last, but they are the cheapest. You can pick up a new one every time you go to the grocery store. Plastic boxes last practically forever and are, by far, the easiest to clean.

You just dump the lining into your composter, rinse the box and reline. Metal is not very attractive, it might rust and it can get very cold or very hot in the chicken coop nesting boxes. The size of the box should be big enough for the chicken to nest in comfortably while still feeling cozy. Approximately twelve inches square is a good size.
