  1. I have an enclosed roost area above the floor of my coop. They put
themselves to bed at night before it gets completely dark. I did lock them
in at night for a few weeks to let them know where to sleep. Now they can
get in and out on their own because their day area is safe from anything
    eating them!

  2. Sigh… I didnt mean to say YOU are doing it. But its a trick of the egg
industry. They keep a light on them and it pumps up the egg producing.
Chickens are pretty cold hardy. Unless youre getting way below freezing
they are fine as long as they have fresh water. You should get about 220 –
270 eggs a year from a healthy chicken. Just give them some extra protien
goodies getting closer to winter and they put an extra layer of fat on to
    help them stay warm.

  3. I Had chickens before and they are alot of fun but my chickens were free
range so they often just slept in high branches in trees

  4. If you live in an area that has a cold winter, like up here in canada 😛
make sure those vents open, because of the humidity, it can make them cold
and possibly sick. Also, get chickens that can stand cold winters if you
    live in a colder climate

  5. When ordering baby chicks, is it ok to put them in a playpen with lots of
hay and in a really warm kitchen? I just think little boxes seem too small.
Is a light important or can I place them in a really warm room?

  6. Isn’t the light meant to keep them warm? And doesn’t it also help during
the winter to keep them warm AND keep up egg production? By the way Deb, no
one is abusing chickens here. They supply the world with eggs…food. If
people were using them as Machines they would be asking how to care for
them….which is what I am doing. I have every intention of raising them
for eggs….so I want to know how to “care” for them.

  8. I like the 2 floor coop! Less of a footprint for a small backyard. Can you
tell me if they naturally go up to the loft to lay and roost or did it take
    some training?
