  1. all hatcheries ‘dispose’ of extra male chicks. I think ideal has a good thing going here to include extra males for free with small orders as a way of ensuring that order arrives alive and warm. How many of those extra males may end up living in someone’s flock because they were just included in the box? How many get passed off to other people who may want them? some people may “feed them up” to slaughter later. fact is it’s an animal we eat. go watch some videos on other hatcheries too.

  2. Ideal is one of the best hatcheries around. I bought from them before and i take good care of my birds. Dont assume things unless you really know.

  3. THEY use male chicks as fillers and they die on arrival or die a few hours later. THIS IS a sad commentary for a life. Male chicks can be donated. adopted, or given to people who are starving or hungry to raise for free or a nominal price — maybe $1 each. They throw them away, or chop them in a grinder. IDEAL is compassionate. This is unnecesssary and cruel way to die. Please tell IDEAL to do something else with their male chicks.

  4. this is hard to watch, all of those chickens with high hopes of good quality life, in reality they will be placed in small cages where they will be shit on and many of them will die in infections and starving or injuries, most male chicks will not even make few days

  5. MOst people would appreciate live chicks and adding the males increases the heat and warmth, causing less death among the females. You are silly, why wouldn’t a chicken farm want a free male chick or chicks? My friend just got 35 chickens from IDEAL and I went over to look at them. They are very good quality, none dead. So I checked out this video, they sell good to great birds from what I have seen.

  6. For all you nut cases who complain about this….if you’ve ever eaten any kind of meat you’ve got no room to talk. Just because someone else kills it for you doesn’t mean there is no blood on your hands. I’ve raised 1000’s of animals for the pet industry and known ranchers who grow 10,000’s for the food industry…..the average rancher takes far better care of his animals than the average per owner does for one simple reason….his living depends on it.l

  7. The live chicks insure the others live and they are fed out and ate.
All hatcheries do this. Males are not as desirable especially in egg laying breeds.
while females may not be as desirable in meat breeds. And even in all-purpose breeds you only want so many cocks in your flock as they will fight and cause havoc.
Nature is a brutal business. You know in China and India they murder female human babies cuz they are undesirable.

  8. You are rather uninformed. What would you rather have… the babies running around on a cold floor? In the trays they are kept safe and heated to prep them for shipping. And they do just fine in shipping… I should know. I have 40 in the other room in a brooder right now from a hatchery. They aren’t mutilated or traumatized. Go back to your peta pals and figure that one out.

  9. I’ve purchased chicks from different hatcheries. Shipped via USPS and purchased from farm supply stores. Of all of the chicks the ones I got from Ideal were my favorites.I ask around to see which store is carrying Ideal chicks. I like the tinted egg chickens, blue, green, and pinkish with lavender speckles, so I got Americana variety. The eggs were big, the chickens very hardy I had one hen that was with me for 10 years, laying all the while. They are also quite smart.

  10. You have to realize that these people don’t typically raise their own birds. They have farmers who have the adult fowl, collect the eggs and bring them to the hatchery. Due to the large number of chicks that they sell, they do not raise all their own birds.

  11. You know I could save lots of money if y’all would just hire me. LOL Great piece… I’ve bought several chicks from you and have been very proud of your chicks. It was really nice to see where they are coming from. 🙂
